Generator Fault Finding

Generator Starts Then Stops

Common reasons a generator starts and then shuts down.

Diagnosis matters

What may be causing the fault?

Repeated shutdowns can be caused by fuel starvation, low oil pressure, overheating, sensors, control-panel settings or other protective shutdowns.

Generator systems combine engine, fuel, electrical generation, control and protection systems. A symptom alone does not identify the failed component. Testing the relevant circuits and operating conditions is the safer way to determine the repair.

What a technician may check

  • Battery and starting system
  • Fuel supply and fuel-system components
  • Engine protection and shutdown signals
  • Control panel and fault indications
  • Alternator and AVR circuits
  • Output voltage and frequency
  • Cooling and mechanical condition where relevant
